Quick Fixes for a Non-Working Garbage Disposal
If you are experiencing a garbage disposal that doesn’t work, there are a few simple fixes you can try on your own before contacting a plumber.
For example, if you can hear the hum of your garbage disposal but it won’t operate properly, follow these three steps to try to determine the cause of the problem and solve it.
- Find and press the reset button that is often located on the bottom of the garbage disposal.
- If this does not change anything, shine a flashlight into the drain to look for any foreign objects, such as utensils.
- If there is an item in the disposal area causing the problem, be sure the power is off and only remove the item with pliers or a grasping tool. It is extremely dangerous and never recommended to put your hand or any other object into the garbage disposal.
